⚠️ On July 1, 2023, Google Universal Analytics properties stopped processing new data. After June 30, 2024, previously collected Universal Analytics will no longer be available. All Google Analytics users should have moved to Google Analytics 4 (GA4) now.

If Google created a new GA4 property for your website “automatically” you likely need to complete additional setup steps to ensure GA4 works for your reporting needs.

Frequently Asked Questions

By default, Google Analytics collects basic information about how many users visit your website, where they came from, and which pages they visit.

However the real power of Google Analytics comes from understanding exactly what user behaviors matter to you, and customizing your analytics configuration.

Google Analytics is a powerful tool that collect additional data about all kinds of user actions — or “events” — on your website.

This includes actions like button or link clicks, form submissions, ecommerce transactions, and more. The most important events for your organization can be designated as conversions and selected for detailed reporting. This requires custom configuration of your Google Analytics account.

If you let Google create a new GA4 property for you as the Universal Analytics sunset date approached, you may still see a warning indicating that your GA4 property still needs additional configuration.

The additional setup steps you need depend on your website and goals for using analytics data. We include recommendations for additional configuration in our GA4 Review and Roadmap offering.

Yes. While Google Analytics is the clear market leader, there are several alternatives. You might consider Matomo or Fathom Analytics.
