Frequently Asked Questions
By default, Google Analytics collects basic information about how many users visit your website, where they came from, and which pages they visit.
However the real power of Google Analytics comes from understanding exactly what user behaviors matter to you, and customizing your analytics configuration.
Google Analytics is a powerful tool that collect additional data about all kinds of user actions — or “events” — on your website.
This includes actions like button or link clicks, form submissions, ecommerce transactions, and more. The most important events for your business or organization can be designated as conversions and selected for detailed reporting. This requires custom configuration of your Google Analytics account.
Google Analytics 3 (or “Universal Analytics”) will stop collecting data after June 2023. This means current Google Analytics users have until that date to transition to using the new Google Analytics 4 platform (or move to another analytics solution).
Two important things to know about moving to GA4:
1) There is no simple “upgrade” pathway. It is a totally different platform and requires a configuration of a new type of analytics property.
2) Historical data from Universal Analytics cannot be imported into GA4. This means if year-on-year reporting is important, you need to have a GA4 property in place by the end of June 2022.
Yes. While Google Analytics is the clear market leader, there are several alternatives. You might consider Matomo or Fathom Analytics.
